Gin Lane and Beer street

More typical of Hogarthian spirit are the twin pictures Beer Street and Gin Lane. They were often used for temperance propaganda, but they have a much profounder significance than the truism that beer is a healthier drink than gin. Actually these pictures are revelations of Eighteen century slum life.
