We worked on two different editions of the novel: Carlotta analyzed Penguin Edition, Giulia Norton Edition and Silvia reviewed the whole work. Then the two lists were put together and compared and here there is the final list.
Penguin Edition is supposed to be based on The Florida Edition: actually in Penguin Edition some notes were missing and Carlotta completed them with the notes of The Florida Edition.
In Norton Edition, frontispieces are not the original ones while the Penguin's ones are.
There is often no difference between quotes and notes of the two editions. However it is quite interesting to observe variations of the translations. When in the notes no translation was available we provided one.
Sterne liked to play with words and languages. In fact we found foreign words used as English words (ex. plural with -s ending, or -ing form of a Greek verb). These words are in the section "Multiorigin" as well as the words of uncertain origin.
The majority of quotes is Latin and French. Italian words often refer to musical world. We found a few Spanish words and just a Guascoigne one. As for Greek, Melvyn New, the editor of The Florida Edition of the works of Laurence Sterne, says that "for Sterne the appereance of Greek in the middle of his text (or in a footnote) had visual significance that ought not to be ignored": that is why Greek words were photographically reproduced from the first edition in Penguin book, while Norton edition simply used Greek alphabet.
